Pelvic floor and orthopedic physical therapy, tailored to your needs

Meet Dr. Monika

Dr. Monika Tangney is a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy, a mom of two, and founder of Active Wellness Physical Therapy. She is a pelvic floor and orthopedic physical therapist who cares for patients of all ages. She grew up in Northern California and came down to San Diego to pursue her career in PT. She completed her B.S in Kinesiology at SDSU and her Doctorate in Physical Therapy at The University of St. Augustine.

She began the early years of her career focused on orthopedic PT, treating post operative patients, sports injuries and the geriatric population. After the birth of her first son, she had the stark realization of how little care the postpartum population receives which in turn sparked her interest in Women’s Health.

For the past 7 years her focus has been on pelvic floor physical therapy, working with pregnant and postpartum patients along with women suffering from a wide range of pelvic floor dysfunction.

Dr. Monika is most passionate about educating her patients in prevention and increasing their confidence to live a pain free, functional life. She shares a wealth of knowledge with her patients and provides her real-life experiences of being a mom of two. While providing therapeutic exercise to address strength deficits, she also looks to support her care with manual treatments along with a holistic approach to meet the goals of the patient.

What is the Pelvic Floor?

A combination of muscles, ligaments and connective tissue that support the pelvic organs - the bladder, rectum, vagina and uterus. Due to a variety of factors, including pregnancy or childbirth, surgery, heavy lifting, obesity, aging and chronic medical conditions, the pelvic floor may become weak or painful over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect during the evaluation?

We will discuss your subjective history where you can tell me your story about what brought you to PT (symptoms, diagnosis, birth history, surgical history). I will assess the mobility of your joints and the strength of your muscles as well as observe your posture and the way you breathe/move. For pelvic floor cases, if appropriate, I can do a vaginal internal exam to assess strength and tone of your pelvic floor muscles/tissue. Don’t worry, it is not as scary as it sounds! I don’t use a speculum or stirrups. Lastly, we come up with goals/exercises you would like to work towards in therapy and I provide you with pertinent resources/education all conveniently emailed to you via a private link.

What if I’m not sure I need Physical therapy?

What are the benefits of seeing a Pelvic Floor Therapist postpartum? Is this necessary care?

I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation where we can talk in more detail regarding your questions or concerns.

Do you accept insurance?

We are an out of network provider so we do not bill directly to insurance. However, when requested I can provide patients with a superbill containing the necessary ICD-10/CPT codes that they can submit to their insurance provider. The superbill provided is not a guarantee that your specific insurance provider will reimburse for the services you have received.

Can I come see you if I’m pregnant?

Of course you can! I prefer to see my patients throughout their pregnancy so I can provide specific education such as birth preparation, laboring positions, and postpartum tips/tricks. If you are concerned about your pregnancy and arriving to PT, I can always contact your OBGYN/Midwife/Doula to get more information.

Every woman would benefit from pelvic floor PT postpartum, regardless of delivery type (c-section or vaginal). In both scenarios, the mother's body goes through extreme changes during pregnancy and birth that if not proactively addressed leads to long term deficits in a high percentage of women. My goal is to proactively help you prevent those deficits from occurring!

Can I use my HSA (Healthcare Savings Account) to pay for my visit?

Yes! Physical therapy is an eligible expense and you can use your HSA debit card to pay for your visit.
